This is an honest question in the face of a lot of hype.
Are there ANY videos of it actually printing? Not just moving.
I understand it is closed loop and it is linear motors...but I have my doubts that they are not getting serious overshoot/correction.
They just had the machine at ERRF (now 3d printopia since everyone forgot about reprap) but there is not a single video of it actually printing. From Twitter I heard 3 or 4 different excuses...table vibrating too much (which is a poor excuse since my printer moves tables like that more with no print issues), broke extruder in transit...couldn't fix it, open enclosure too dangerous for public hands and finally that they have issues with the magnets being around too much heat/build chambers.
Now these were all statements by twitter users and influencers...so I am not sure which statements if any were actually from Peopoly...but I personally am curious to actually see some print results more than I am to read 100 different influencers talk about how innovative this is without ever seeing it actually print.
Like others have said...linear motors are nothing special. Being able to do them on a machine for $2k retail while actually holding resolution at the claimed speeds would be.
From what I have seen it doesn't even appear they are hitting the claimed speeds in the video....but I have not measured that either.
P.S. The overshoot/lash I am talking about would be trivial to test with some very basic machining tools...so if I am wrong it would be easy to prove.
- karmakaze 3y agoWith known characteristics of the linear motors this can be accounted for with software.
- Ccecil 3y agoPossibly....but is it? Does the machine make prints? If so why are there no videos or pictures? I don't doubt linear motors are viable. My doubts are that they are doing it for under $2k. My understanding is they are already taking preorders at a discount from that price even. Again, I would love for this to be a thing. Especially if they release their work opensource. I just have my doubts about results for the price...as well as my concern about the lack of a "working machine" while so many people are advertising for them.
- karmakaze 3y agoSome actual output such as this model/volume in x time would be awesome with the artifact itself to see. Watching it in action would also help understanding the tech. All we can do at the moment is see that it could be possible and wonder how at at price.
