The Deceiving Virtues of Technology
- disqard 3y agoThis essay was written over 20 years ago, and has aged remarkably well. It anticipates (and provides a very actionable mental model for) smartphone/screen addiction, and the rise of LLMs and other technology that claims to replicate/replace human cognitive functions.
- nonrandomstring 3y agoIts a lovely read for me, because in the quest to teach digital self defence I've long realised that a sure way to communicate to most ordinary people what must be said about cybersecurity, cryptography, systems.... is via literature, poetry, drama and film. An ongoing quest for me is to find short, powerful and accessible pieces. The romantics are good; E.M Forster, Mary Shelley, H.G Wells.... The Greeks are useful too, but one has to go carefully so as not to scare-off people. Wrote about it here some moons ago; http://www.icicte.org/assets/icicte2019_5.4_farnell.pdf http://www.icicte.org/assets/icicte2019_5.4_farnell.pdf
