Ask HN: My Meta ads account was hacked – Is my only option to sue?
I'm at a loss and I need advice.
Hackers took control of an FB account of freelancer who was helping me run my ads, and ran a "Wine Course" for $21,000.
I'm a small business, and now it's been 177 days and I've been back and forth with meta requesting updates probably 50 separate times.
Finally today they said "Based on our initial investigation, we don’t believe there is evidence to suggest there was a compromise on Business Manager ID...".
I'm at a loss. $21k just gone. Citibank denied my dispute. If you look at my Meta account this is the most obvious hack / steal ever, I can't imagine a judge wouldn't find in my favor.
I don't know what to do. I'm just sad and at a loss. Any advice would be appreciated.
- brucethemoose2 3y agoI wonder how many others are in similar situations? Feels like a good premise for a class action.
- nckishtp 3y agoThis happened to me a few years ago with them, back when they were Facebook. It was for less money, and they refunded it really quickly. I just can't believe they're doing this to me. It's now not the hacker that's stealing from me, but it's Meta who is looking at this and ignoring the obvious evidence and situation and choosing to keep the money. It's now them stealing from me. I even own stock in Meta. It's just surreal.
- brucethemoose2 3y ago> It's now them stealing from me They don't really want to steal from you, they just... don't care. They can't be bothered to hire more actual humans for looking at cases like this, because that costs money, and no one is making them do it. We went through a similar thing with a bricked Nexus phone with Google (though of course not at this financial scale). Getting attention from a human is like pulling teeth, and eventually they just started handing out refunds no questions asked because they'd rather do that than deal with users.
