When I still had a motorcycle (early 2000s), I'd find a lot of rural stations didn't have modern tech on the pumps, and there were a lot of stations that still allowed pump-then-pay. Some stations just have shitty tech. A station near me fails open if you initiate a credit card transaction, take the pump off the hook, and then abort the transaction.
