Greek Temples Made of Wood
- hot_gril 3y agoAncient skeuomorphic design, that's cool. Also, the fact that only stone structures remain today reminds me of how ancient Greek sculptures were actually painted bright colors, which later faded.
- 13of40 3y agoThat's been going on a long time - see the "stone age" and "cavemen". Is it any coincidence that stone lasts a lot longer than wood or leather, and caves preserve artifacts better than leaving them in an open field?
- jasonjamerson 3y agoI have been trying to figure out the origin of egg and dart for years. This is an interesting direction to explore, I guess with some artistic license over centuries I could see that it evolved from the tip points of structural members. Maybe the rings of a wooden pole splitting from drying out.
- unwind 3y agoClarifying link [1] for people like myself who are clearly behind on their architectural nomenclature studies. [1]: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg-and-dart https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg-and-dart
- Ericson2314 3y agoArticle claims it comes from the opium poppy. Huh...
- zabzonk 3y agoare there any existing greek roofed temples (not tombs) that support any of this?
