- kjkjadksj 3y agoTurns out you can do that in an office too
- hotnfresh 3y ago… and nearly everyone does.
- shortcake27 3y agoIf you’re more concerned with how long a software engineer sits in front of a computer, opposed to the work they actually get done, you’ve already lost. Edit: if you’re going to downvote me that’s fine, but please explain why “number of hours spent at computer” is at all a useful metric. It’s a genuine question; I’m not being facetious. I’ll get nothing done all day then wake up in the middle of the night with the solution to a problem. The amount of time I spend coding doesn’t really correlate with business value.
- yellow_lead 3y agoSoftware is a creative process that requires brain effort. You can't always force progress. Work also happens when we aren't in the chair.
- amanaplanacanal 3y agoI really don’t understand this. If the company isn’t getting the productivity they expect, they should deal with that. If they can’t tell, what difference does it make?
- renewiltord 3y agoIt appears they are dealing with it by asking people to come in to the office.
- thinkharderdev 3y agoHow is that dealing with it exactly? Are they able to somehow assess productivity better when people are in the office? How? Some are arguing that people are just naturally more productive in office than at home. I don't necessarily but that argument but it at least makes sense. If what you're worried about is people slacking off at home then I don't quite see how RTO is a solution to that. I've worked with people in that past who showed up to the office every day and played poker online, browsed reddit and watched videos on YouTube.
- MisterBastahrd 3y agoYes. Because they're an edge case and most of us probably have good enough common sense not to punish everyone because a few people are assholes. If you are an employer and someone manages to stay employed under your leadership while having multiple jobs, that's on you.
- chrismarlow9 3y agoThe reason I've asked you all here today is because my boss told me to do it. So here we are.
- yedava 3y agoCorporations do everything in their power, including illegal things to maximize profits. Why can't an individual do what's best for them?
