> Contextual advertising is said to be privacy-safe because it eliminates the need for cookies, third-party trackers, and the processing of other personal data. [..] However, the current state of contextual advertising does not look anything like our plain understanding of it
No - what we want is less tracking - contextual advertising is simply a side-effect. The author seems well intentioned, but she is fighting industry smoke and mirrors. Arguing what is contextual and what is behavioral is a distraction - the point is that they're still tracking us, even when they call it "contextual" (they've simply expanded the meaning of "context" to cover user location, recent browsing history, even chat messages...).
Especially pernicious the claim that contextual is worse than behavioral because it involves "Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, natural language processing models for tone and sentiment analysis, computer vision, audio analysis, and more". This implies behavioral advertising does not have access to, or does not use, all of these techniques as well. Why wouldn't it?
