European telecom groups ask Brussels to make Big Tech pay more for networks
- ksec 3y agoEvery time I read similar story I try to think from the ISP / Network Provider perspective but still fail to understand where their rational are coming from. Other than pure greed. They could have cut their their customer's access to Big Tech. And we all know their customer will switch to another network. Their sole purpose is to connect their customer to the wider Internet. And the Internet are already operating with peering and IXP. As much as I hate to say it, May be Apple should ask all these Telecoms to pay to access Apple's infrastructure. That is from CDN to iCloud. I am pretty sure Apple's customer will switch network rather than switching ISP.

The telecoms already have paying clients (such as me), why should they be able to sell the same infrastructure again to somebody else? Besides, I also pay Netflix. So if Netflix is forced to pay to the optics to my door, guess what will happen with my Netflix subscription. In effect, I will pay twice for the same infrastructure. If the telecom want others to pay for investments, we already have excellent mechanisms to do so. Offer new shares, or obligations, and allow anybody to buy them if they think that will be a good investment.
