Housing in the Netherlands is either your friend has an uncle looking for a tenant and now you have a reasonably priced flat that's a reasonable size. Or, you go through a company and pay out the nose. In both cases it seems almost impossible to find a place this way. But I definitely agree, Amsterdam sucks. Utrecht is waaaay better and it's only a half hour on the train to Amsterdam to see whatever you want.
