Japan reins in 'stealth marketing' with new regulation
- killerOGG 3y agoThanks for sharing this, I read the article. Can anyone provide the difference between marketing and advertising? I lost my notes -- there was a formal definition IIRC. (This issue has been a plague on social media since the site I used to brag "I can put you on the front page" of went bankrupt. Own your biases!)
- jfim 3y agoMarketing is anything that's for promoting sales, while advertising is running ads. Advertising is a subset of marketing. Word of mouth marketing (eg. refer a friend and you both get $5 off) is marketing, but not advertising.
- floss_silicate 3y agoMarketing traditionally encompasses: price, product, placement (distribution) and promotion. PR, advertising and sales fall under different branches of promotion.
- paularmstrong 3y agoIt seems that there are no real consequences here. What's the point? It's already a requirement in the US that anyone that is being paid to promote something is required to disclose this information, but that doesn't happen all the much in reality already.
