"If I were Paul Graham, these types of companies simply would not satisfy me (despite what look to be very lucrative payoffs)" There's a difference in investing in companies expecting some kind of a return and throwing money at really ambitious ideas in the hope that one of those gets really successful. I cannot see how investing carefully and getting returns (ie. making money) is not satisfying.
