Thousands of salmon escaped an Icelandic fish farm. The impact could be deadly
- ggm 3y agoI'm not trying to minimise the consequences of this breakout here when I say that fish protein may be the most important farmable animal protein source we have, and that compared to beef it's ecological impact is currently significantly less, if not zero. I don't think that's just about scale. Sourcing feed for farmed salmon and tuna is a huge issue (depleting krill stocks: work to uplift insect protein I think is a way off but I would welcome being corrected) and the waste stream is an issue too. Humans are omnivores and animal protein high in fish oil is amazingly nutritious and helps with brain growth in kids, bone strength, autoimmune problems like arthritis and rheumatism. Chicken has the lowest impact apparently. Then fish farming.

Figuring out how to achieve human nutritional needs while minimizing the suffering of animals (merely for our own benefit) is the ultimate goal, in my opinion. Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this important topic.
