Many hard problems are solved by the thinking deeply about a problem, consistently over the long period of time.

Your brain isn't any different from physical muscles; it needs rest and can be overextended. Muscles need time to repair and reinforce tendons after a workout. Meanwhile, practice requires rest so your mind has time to form connections and store new knowledge in long term memory. There's been many situations where I threw myself at a problem for over a day, only to wake up the next morning and solve my blocker in under an hour.
