Industrial factory planting of trees as a way to capture carbon seems like a very temporary solution unless we can keep the trees from re-releasing the carbon onto the atmosphere. But fostering a forest where there's a whole ecology of animals and plants that all function as a way to store carbon then that seems like a plus to keeping carbon captured with in the forest. All life on earth is based on carbon so every life is a carbon capture machine. It's true that as soon as an organism dies they release their store carbon but that's why a forest is advantageous since the regenerating organisms will need carbon and therefore keep it away from the atmosphere. It can't be the only solution but if done right it can help.
Gates is right. People think that planting trees is all that's needed to fix the problem. That's not true. But creating a whole forest of trees and fostering an ecology that promotes diverse life is something that can contribute to fixing the problem. But it's not the solution and it's dangerous to present it as a way to fix climate change since there's no way it can keep up with the carbon release of fossil fuels.
