Russian Special Forces deploy Sosna-N anti-sniper robot in Ukraine
- johnnyworker 3y agosaving you a search: https://niipolyus.ru/en/products/obnaruzhiteli-sredstv-nablyudeniya/sosna-n https://niipolyus.ru/en/products/obnaruzhiteli-sredstv-nably... > SOSNA-N neutralizer of optical surveillance equipment is designed for detection and locаtion of hostile optical and electronic-optical (O and EOD) surveillance and sighting equipment and its neutralization with a laser counter beam. The device has no comparable domestic and foreign analogues.
- bobowzki 3y agoHow can it use laser to detect optical devices?
- TheLoafOfBread 3y agoI guess glares, but problem is that it will detect all shiny objects - mirrors, windows, chromed surfaces?
- solardev 3y agoHow does this work? Is it shining a searchlight across its entire field of view to hunt for reflections? Visual? Infrared?
- brobinson 3y agoTime of flight sensor + laser like on Abramovich's yacht? https://newatlas.com/worlds-biggest-yacht-eclipse-roman-abramovich-anti-paparazzi-laser/12912/ https://newatlas.com/worlds-biggest-yacht-eclipse-roman-abra...
- solardev 3y agoHmm, the article is light on details. That one supposedly detects CCDs (how?) while this one looks for optical reflections (glare) from lenses.
- usefulcat 3y ago> capable of detecting active optical devices such as sniper rifle scopes, binoculars, and anti-tank missile targeting systems For anti-tank missile targeting systems I could understand, since that might involve illuminating the target with a laser, but is it really that common for binoculars and scopes to emit light?
- thefurdrake 3y agoI'm definitely not a sniper. But anti-reflective devices have been designed, sold, and presumably used. These devices are designed to mitigate against human eyes. Modern cameras are way more powerful than the human eye. Even if you only get a glint without an exact location, that in and of itself is invaluable because: 1) You know there's a sniper in the area (or, well, there's something with optics in the area at least) 2) Maybe (?) an array of these could triangulate the position from a brief series of glints collected by multiple detectors; every datapoint becomes significant At the very least, the officers would know to keep their heads a little lower for a few days.
- hughesjj 3y agoLol such obvious propaganda bs, their logo even looks like a wojack. Russia really is all about the disinformation hype and fake superweapons. The site is written in bad English and trying to seem like a legit defense industry bulletin, but they can't fake a .mil tld
- scrps 3y agoI hope it works as well as their tires.
- tristanb 3y agoSeems very fixable with a Ukrainian 50cal round.
- thefurdrake 3y agoAssuming this actually works (I /assume/ this is based off of passive lens flare detection???), this is easily countered with a bunch of 300 dollar drones with 120 dollar off the shelf optics attached, sitting in tree branches vaguely aiming in the direction of the device. Nice expensive waste of money, Russia. GG.
