My experience with Microsoft Surface began during my college years. Prior to that I was primarily a MacBook Pro user. I first adopted the Surface Pro 3 for note taking. Over time, I upgraded to the Surface Pro 4, and then to the Surface Book and Surface Book 2.
In my full-time job I use a Mac. Around 2017, my company began divesting from Surface devices. The reason why (which also echos my experiences) is they often fell short of expectations. Official docks proved to be unreliable, and the battery life was never quite up to par, not to mention they weren't easily repairable. A notable issue I encountered with the Surface Book was electrical shorting by the connector between the detachable keyboard/GPU.
After Surface I went back to Mac. Circa 2021 I became disillusioned with laptops with their poor performance, thermal issues, lack of repairability/battery replacements/upgradability and general ergonomics. For example, 4K is just a drain on performance and finding a 2K laptop with a nice all aluminum build has been impossible. Today I use an iPad Pro for personal creative work (photo/video editing, drawing, illustrating) and a mini-ITX PC which is portable and fits in my carry-on.
Having spent a lifetime using laptops, my experience with a my mini-ITX PC build was nothing short of revelatory. It opened my eyes to just how fast a desktop computer can be.
