Here in Greece when people want go they'll go to a bank and buy British gold pounds (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_(British_coin) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_(British_coin)). I'm not sure there's a limit; you can buy as many as you want.
- Symbiote 3y agoIn Britain they're called "gold sovereigns", though I've never heard of anyone owning one — only from references in James Bond films and so on. I wasn't aware the nominal value was £1.
- nly 3y agoLots of wealthy buy these by the tube. Being legal tender they are free of VAT and CGT on sale, which isn't true of investment grade gold biscuits.
- rullelito 3y agoFalse, you pay CGT on investment gold in almost all countries.
- pjc50 3y agoBut not on UK gold, silver, and platinum coins in the UK. https://www.royalmint.com/gold-price/capital-gains-tax-on-investments/ https://www.royalmint.com/gold-price/capital-gains-tax-on-in... ; mine have, to my surprise, done better than my stock portfolio and almost as well as my house as investments. (just don't buy new ones, you have to pay 20% VAT on those which is silly)
- pjc50 3y agoThe Q suitcase with the 50 gold sovereigns from From Russia With Love, was it? Ironically the plot of Goldfinger relies on something which no longer exists: capital controls. The evil Auric Goldfinger was trying to circumvent British control of the export of money by hiding gold in car panels.
- spiritplumber 3y agoThere was a more recent Bond movie whose evil plot was about water rights... which had happened, legally, while the movie came out, I think.
- monadology 3y agoThe next Bond villain's evil plan will involve either local zoning law or capital repatriation taxes.
- sneeze-slayer 3y agoWhen I watched Goldfinger as a kid I really did not understand the plot at all. It was only when I was a bit older and heard about some of these things did it actually make sense.
- spapas82 3y agoI found a bank web page (in english https://www.piraeusbank.gr/en/idiwtes/ependyseis/agora-polisi-xrisou https://www.piraeusbank.gr/en/idiwtes/ependyseis/agora-polis...) with more info about buying gold sovereigs. A gold sovereign is sold by the bank at 480 euros (https://www.piraeusbank.gr/en/Idiwtes/Epitokia-Deltia-Timon/Imerisio-Deltio-Timon-Synallagmatos-Trapezogrammation https://www.piraeusbank.gr/en/Idiwtes/Epitokia-Deltia-Timon/...) This is very popular here because gold sovereigns here in greece are traditionally given as presents from close relatives on very important moments like marriage, child birth etc (i.e when a child is born its grandparents will give a gold sovereign to its parents)
