Fingers crossed they kill the Games Store.
- Kiro 3y agoWhy?
- misterbishop 3y ago[flagged]
- Kiro 3y agoFlagged. You've been here since 2014 and should know better.
- misterbishop 3y agoit's because of my experience that i do know better. wise up.
- babypuncher 3y agoThe way they try to push their store is annoying, so people want them to fail outright. I think few people will disagree that letting Valve have a de facto monopoly is a bad thing. But Epic's whole strategy around EGS seems built entirely around appealing to publishers and developers at the expense of making the platform desirable for users. Their marquee feature is that they take a smaller cut of sales on their platform (12% vs Valve's 20-30%), but this savings never gets passed down to the customer. So from a user's perspective, this isn't a feature, it's a footnote with no real bearing on their decision making. Where Valve has invested a lot of time and money into building out platform features that add value for the customer (Steam Play, Steam Input, Workshop, Big Picture Mode, a fairly reasonable refund system), Epic uses all their money to buy exclusivity deals. The platform itself is barebones. The client takes twice as long to load as Steam despite having 1/10th the feature set.
- tru1ock 3y agoI would have used it in its current state, even if it was worse if they did not resort to shitty business decisions. They directly stole titles away from me that I was playing on linux through steam. They can crash and burn for all I care now.
- capableweb 3y agoI love Unreal/Epic but I agree, feels like a distraction. Go back to 100% focus on making the best game engine possible by developing great games in house by using said engine.
- frankjr 3y agoSo that we can go back to the Steam monopoly?
- misterbishop 3y agoIf another company wants to make a Steam competitor on PC, go for it. EGS isn't a competitor, it's an internet scam.
- spywaregorilla 3y agoHow is it a scam?
- nicolaslem 3y agoThose are strong words, do you mind expanding a bit? I personally get my games from whatever store has the best deal, which means my library is split between Steam, Gog and Epic. I don't feel that one is better than the other, they all seem equally meh to me.
- sirtaj 3y agoI don't think Steam requires or even pays for platform-exclusive games. If your game doesn't need Steam-specific features, you can sell it on Steam and anywhere else you like. Even the DRM is entirely optional.
- belltaco 3y agoYou can't reduce the price of the game anywhere else or Steam will kick the game out of their store. https://www.americanbar.org/groups/business_law/resources/business-law-today/2021-march/most-favored-or-too-favored/#:~:text=The%20complaint%20alleges%20that%20the,to%20remain%20profitable%20on%20Steam https://www.americanbar.org/groups/business_law/resources/bu....
- pjmlp 3y agoSo people complain about single stores on mobile devices, and then they wish for a single one in PC games, what an irony.
- misterbishop 3y agoIt would be stupid to be "against" competing stores on PC. PC is an open platform anybody can write any code they want on it. It's just a fact that Steam is the only good one by a mile. As long as all the others are dogshit, games exclusive to those stores may as well not exist.
- pgeorgi 3y agoThere was a world before "stores", you know...
- pjmlp 3y agoThere were always stores, physical ones, or shipping.
- nicolaslem 3y agoMultiple stores is great but I wished there was only one launcher. I must have seven installed currently on my gaming PC, each needing updating every week.
- pjmlp 3y agoImpossible without a store standard.
- logicalmonster 3y agoHow does that help gamers? I'm not saying I'm a fan of Epic's game store or that anybody is poised to post a serious threat to Steam's dominance anytime soon, but it seems like a good thing that Steam has some competition to keep them honest.
- ThatPlayer 3y ago> Steam has some competition to keep them honest. That's straight up a line from Gabe Newell, owner of Steam: https://www.gamesradar.com/gabe-newell-epic-games-store/ https://www.gamesradar.com/gabe-newell-epic-games-store/
