Apparently this mostly happens when running resource-intensive tasks, or fast charging. I don't think I do much of the former (on my 13), but I definitely don't do the latter. I have a not-very-new MagSafe compatible charger that can't charge at the maximum rate that the 13 can accept. But I'd rather charge at a lower speed and keep the battery in better shape for longer.
I'll keep using this charger as my primary charger even after I get a new phone. If I need a quick boost, I'll plug the phone in with a cable — but that is a very rare need.
That said, if Apple is going to talk about the performance and the charging rate, the phone needs to be able to accomplish that without melting down. The worst I've heard is that some overheat while charging in a car's charge pad. That's not good, since the driver might be relying on it for navigation.
