Amazon's new CEO Andy Jassy “is being forced to clean up Jeff Bezos' mess”
- jgalt212 3y agoThis reminds me of Khrushchev's two letters.
- AgentOrange1234 3y ago“Cleaning up the mess” is quite a charitable take. Jassy has thoroughly destroyed trust in senior leadership, first with layoffs, blunt hiring freezes, and a truly chaotic rollout of RTO, RTH, RTT, etc. I’ve never seen morale so low.
- SV_BubbleTime 3y agoZIRP was keeping moral high. That ride is over for now.
- amznburn 3y agoThere was a series of grotesque missteps before that which, in part, led to the layoffs. I think there's a few lawsuits that describe it. Forcing employees to either break federal/international laws or be fired is not a good look. Forcing employees to endure harassment, retaliation, and psychological abuse for a paycheck is not acceptable.
- nine_zeros 3y agoIs this some Jassy sponsored astroturfing?
- local_crmdgeon 3y agoJassy seems pretty out of his depth, and the show seems to be run by his lieutenants. They're busy fighting among themselves, the hoped for RTH mass quitting didn't happen, and generally the house is very messy. There's going to be more bloodletting. Why does Amazon have Wondery AND Audible podcasts? Why Athena AND Redshift? Fresh and Go and Whole Foods? There's a ton of "synergies" post-Bezos that can go.
- fnordpiglet 3y agoRedshift and Athena are pretty different products. Redshift is a high performance high cost online data warehouse while Athena is a commodity wear sweatpants and eat hot pockets no fixed cost manages presto. One is for serious business, the other is for data pipelines and casual analytics on cold storage. I would say too, I worked a lot with Andy, Wilke, and to a lesser extent bezos. Andy is no slouch and he earned his job and Wilke earned his loss. But Amazon is a mess, I can’t defend retails business structure - it’s like a giant blank check to product managers. I don’t know I could classify this as cleaning up Bezos mess, it’s hard to see the immense value he created as a mess, I do think Andy has an Augean stable task ahead of him. I think there’s few people capable of that task as Andy. That said, Andy has a giant gaping hole where his empathetic heart belongs. I am glad I’m not there any more.
- local_crmdgeon 3y agoAgreed re: Athena, but customers use them the same way. Sometimes it's just down to different teams in the same companies, it's not great. Otherwise, that's an impressive history - are you a mgmt consultant? Retail could make money tomorrow if it wasn't so insanely poorly run, like you said. It's stuck in the "profits don't matter, just do more stuff" loop, and honestly will be until they cut deep. I also don't understand where Amazon is going with all these other brands. Twitch? Audible? OneMedical? There's no way that they all make it until the end of the decade.
- fnordpiglet 3y agoThey keep sniping at Bezos for his “never ending vacation” and “permavacation” - uhhhh - that’s called retirement. And the CEO is always cleaning up the prior guys mess. The next one will be cleaning up Jassys mess

- happytiger 3y agoI always get my celebrity gossip news from The Daily Mail, don’t you?
- hnfong 3y agoYea the couple are definitely looking good considering they're well into their 50s...
- fnordpiglet 3y agoIt’s all that young boy blood
- Freedom2 3y ago"forced to"? Don't take the CEO role then? Or was he also forced to do that as well?
- pndy 3y agoAye, pressed against the wall and intimidated by a bundle of banknotes /s
