We show that whereas taking more notes can be beneficial, laptop note takers’
tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim rather than processing information and
reframing it in their own words is detrimental to learning.
Taking notes on a laptop really only kicked into high-gear for me with the move to remote work at the beginning of the pandemic. The above quote really resonates with me, I essentially had to completely relearn how to take effective notes.
Typing has so much more bandwidth for conveying information, I was (ineffectively) using it to transcribe more detailed notes on what the speaker was saying, but what I eventually learned to do was take the same short notes I had taken on paper, but augment the notes with links, quotes, definitions, backstory, etc.
