This is part of a longstanding effort by anti-groups to price people out of firearm ownership.
With this tax, gun owners in California will pay 11% + up to 10.75% general sales tax + 10%-11% federal excise tax. Maximum of 32.75% tax on a firearm.
But that's not all, since California has deliberately restricted the supply of handguns in the state by banning all new semiautomatic pistol models for the last 10 years (unless you purchase from a cop, then its legal because reasons), forcing manufacturers to make old, outdated California specific models, and extorting them for the "privilege" of keeping their handguns on the roster. California has also banned people from importing ammunition into the state, and implemented a mandatory ammunition background check system. It costs $20 to register, and $1 for each transaction.
Then there's local regulations, like San Jose's insurance requirement (which would not have covered a single incident in the last 7 years, but gun owners must buy anyway), and zoning regulations that prevent people from opening up gun stores.
- agensaequivocum 3y agoDon't forget the DROS fees, ammo background check fees, and SB 2 which, in the words of the sponsor himself, generally only allows one to carry a concealed gun on some sidewalks. This effectively eviscerates our God-given right to carry a firearm.
