If anything I'd say Fez's real achievement is the art. Once the novelty of the 2D/3D hybrid gimmick has dried up (which happens pretty fast), the gameplay is pretty mediocre. If you watched Indie Game: The Movie, it seemed like pretty much the entirety of Phil Fish's effort went into obsessing over the art. And I have to give him credit that it looks pretty damn good.
