I started following Meredith Whittaker on social media this year. I think she has very rational views on security and privacy. I have been making my living as an AI practitioner since 1982 but in the last few years I have flipped my interests more to technologies effects on society, privacy, etc. I wish everyone in tech would take a little time to read the books Privacy is Power and Surveillance Capitalism. Personally, I place some hope in open source, open LLMs, self hosting AI, etc. I say “some hope” because the surveillance industrial military complex has so many more resources than organizations like Hugging Face.
