Google is retiring its Gmail Basic HTML view in January 2024
- pfdietz 3y agoI didn't even know this was a thing.
- bediger4000 3y agoThat's too bad. I use it. It's typically faster than their "modern" interface, and does not suffer from "flat design".
- dangus 3y agoIt falls in a weird technological in-between. If you need good performance and highly efficient data usage on a spotty or non-existent connection, a POP email client is the way to go. The basic HTML site has zero advantages in comparison. If you have access to a half decent web browser, chances are it’s perfectly capable of running the JavaScript mobile version. Sure, it runs JavaScript, but it’s not exactly heavy.
- Jigsy 3y agoI had actually noticed this a few weeks back. I figured they'd finally killed it. Looks like I was right on the nose... I still haven't forgiven them for killing the Gmail Notifier taskbar program.
- jersa 3y agoLike, why? How much maintenance could it possibly be for them, versus some segment of their users with limited/expensive connectivity who possibly depend on Gmail daily losing maybe the only usable means they have of accessing it. Lame.
- beardyw 3y ago> Like, why? Presumably the plain HTML version requires considerably different back end services. I imagine that is the driver here.
- sebtron 3y agoToo bad, I used it a lot this year. It works much better than the standard view on the old, crappy netbook I use when I travel. No, I am not going to replace it with a Chromebook.
