That's kind of a high fantasy trope. "Blood and ashes!" from Wheel of Time comes to mind. It's like how they like to use different measures of time and distance. "It took him a fortnight to travel all those leagues." Helps take you out of the real world.

- username332211 3y agoBlood and ashes was a Robert Jordan thing, blasted Sanderson had nothing to do with it.
- Grimburger 3y agoI meant it more in the way that he did it first and Sanderson ended up finishing his magnum opus? Basically two birds in a tree.
