I am sorry what?
- francisofascii 3y agoA bad viral infection can sometimes lead to a longer term stress intolerance condition. It is a real thing.

- hef19898 3y agoIf you have that, impressive to have survived Amazon for longer than the on-boarding. I consider myself quite resistant to stress and pressure, and don't think I'd be able to survive that again. Good thing, I know I did once, and am in a comfortable position of not having to anymore.
- tr888 3y agoYeh, it doesn't exist
- a2800276 3y agoIt totally exists!!! I have a bullshit intolerance disability, which is very similar. I didn't even bother to apply to Amazon because of it.
- dsauerbrun 3y agodo they mean shingles? I am one of 3 people in their 30s that I know of to get shingles... all work in tech. seems like the disease meant for elderly people is becoming more common for young people... anecdotally at least
- malfist 3y agoAmusingly I managed to get shingles when I was in my 20s in college. I was about to lose (and did eventually) lose my scholarship and was basically not sleeping. Stressed to the max. I'm surprised Amazon isn't a shingles factory.
- jawns 3y agoThe term "stress intolerance disorder" is not a recognized clinical classification in the field of psychiatry or psychology. The closest things I could find are Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder. But none of those quite fit the description given in the article. There are numerous medical and mental-health conditions that become worse as a result of stress, but they're usually described more specifically, not as a stress intolerance disorder. I would be interested in a company's ADA compliance obligations for someone who says they have a stress intolerance disorder. Is it reasonable to expect a business to alleviate anything that employee perceives as stressful?
- francisofascii 3y agoIt is not a mental condition, so you won't find it in the DSM. It is a physical conditional related to the immune system. Look up ME/CFS.
- jawns 3y agoME/CFS doesn't seem to fit the symptoms she's describing, either. The fact that she can work fine in remote settings, and that symptoms only appear when stress is elevated, is inconsistent with ME/CFS.
- ghusto 3y agoYou ever wonder why the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) gets thicker every time a drug company patents a new drug? Certain societal groups are particularly receptive to their bullshit (hint; us) and tear you to pieces if you try to tell them their "disease" is made up. It's easier to have a label for your poor psychological habits than to do the work to change yourself.
- ghusto 3y agoLoL and the inevitable downvotes rain :D
- kbelder 3y agoMaybe they need to classify the need to be classified with a mental disorder as a mental disorder, and then everybody would be happy, and the book would be thinner.
- jawns 3y agoOn the other hand, insurance companies are more likely to pay for treatment if the condition has a name, which is why sometimes patients receive "sympathetic diagnoses," where they're diagnosed with a condition that has a close-enough match to their symptoms, simply to get insurance authorization for treatment.
