If you’re interested in hard-to-parse English relative clauses, check out the first sentence of George Washington’s first inaugural address:
“Among the vicissitudes incident to life no event could have filled me with greater anxieties than that of which the notification was transmitted by your order, and received on the 14th day of the present month.”
- anon_cow1111 3y agoI'm very sorry but someone's going to have to translate this for me, please? bonus points for a successful haiku.
- chronogram 3y ago"I'm happy to have received your message" / "Thanks for the heads-up" / "Notification marked as read"

- Zecc 3y agoBug report: current month not specified in RHS.
- bananapub 3y agoyou sent me a letter and holy fuck was it a bummer
- wongarsu 3y agoBy your order a message was transmitted. I received it on the 14th of this month. That message was about some event. This event filled me with great anxiety. The anxiety was greater than that caused by other events from the vicissitudes incident to life.
- sheepshear 3y agoThe thing I feared most Was receiving your letter And then it arrived

- tarsinge 3y agoAs a French this looks like the kind of sentence I could write if I was translating word for word to English. The word for word translation of the discourse is also quite readable in French: "Aucun événement n’aurait pu me rendre plus angoissé que celui dont la notification a été transmise par votre commande, et reçu le 14e jour de ce mois."
- abid786 3y agoYou’re right but the word dont always poses trouble for English learners of French
- wongarsu 3y agoAs a German this also reads like a fairly normal sentence. In written form it would have a couple more commas in German, which would make it easier to read, but when delivering a speech verbally this is taken care of by intonation and pauses anyways, turning this into a non-issue for the intended audience even in English.
- waveBidder 3y agowhat an odd thing to say in an inaugural address. this is a very directed sentence.

- atombender 3y agoIt's addressed to "fellow Citizens of the Senate and of the House of Representatives".
