China’s Abandoned, Obsolete Electric Cars Are Piling Up in Cities
- toomuchtodo 3y agoWould someone need to buy these? Or are they free for the taking if someone can get them to a port for shipment? Please share ground truth if available!
- ggm 3y agoSurely there's post car life for the lithium, either as inputs for new batteries or repurposed as-is? I believe I have read that the power demands for driving are radically different to power supply stability, frequency, inductive load handling and so ex-car batteries do have use, even when they are way off peak storage capacity. Even 50% can be useful! There are gigawatts, and gigawatt-hours of power potential in this stuff. At the cost of labour, identifying and routing around/removing/replacing dead cells is not infeasible. I suspect many of these are stripped, and are just waiting for the right market conditions to do the end-of-life recycling. The volume speaks to weak bounds on a surge economy/consumer cycle mismatch. There are equivalent mountains somewhere for TVs, fridges, washing machines, Buses, normal Cars. We're just used to assuming they get dealt with and haven't seen what happens when a central purchase of 10,000 units of something all age out in broadly the same time. That said, both this and the bicycle/scooter mountains are awesome statements of inefficient economics, and exploitative investment.
