I'd rather pay Valve 30% and put up with their de facto monopoly than help Epic
- rowanG077 3y agoCouldn't agree more. Valve has repeatedly proven they are incredible stewards of PC gaming. I rather have that then a fractured industry like we have in video streaming land. And Epic is doing their best to destroy PC gaming in that same way. They won't get a single cent for me.
- raxxorraxor 3y agoNot only that, they also used their probably incredible amount of cash to give a lot back. Helping make Linux more viable for gaming, despite the monopoly have given us more options. This cannot ever happen with a company like Microsoft or Epic, that always try to corner a market and give people less option. They don't have the broad perspective on gaming that Valve seems to have. Sure, things like gamepass is a solid deal for the casual user. But there are long term side effects that are not in your favor.
- salad-tycoon 3y agoI have a lot of games on epic, haven’t played or payed for any of them. Haven’t checked their weekly offer in a while, realized Im never going to play a long game again so why bother. I’ve been trying to finish RDR2 for at least 4-5 years. Point being they give out free games, or at least used to. So if you want to do harm, do that I guess and charge them .30 dollars or whatever they pay publishers for give away games.
- Reubend 3y agoWhat a bad take. You'd rather have a monopoly than a duopoly? Epic hasn't done anything particularly bad for PC gaming, and while I love Valve's contributions to Linux gaming, I don't think Steam is nearly as great as most people seem to think it is. Their client is slow, always updates at inconvenient times, and it's got gimmicks I don't want like card packs. I like Steam, because they were the first to really push digital downloads in the PC market. They made it relatively easy to purchase games compared to everyone else, and their client is way better than Origin or whatever garbage Ubisoft uses now. But let's not act like Steam is perfect here; if every games store is taking 30%, then YOU the consumer is paying higher prices in the end.
- rowanG077 3y agoThe question of monopoly vs duopoly is too simplistic. Do question is do. Do you want a monopoly where the monopolist has a multi-decade long proven track record of integrate and has the customer well being as a focus. Or do you want a duopoly where the ecosystem is fractured and one is actively working to ruin the ecosystem. The answer for me. Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, give me the monopoly.
- pornel 3y agoIt's a shame that GOG<>Steam integration is a poor hack based on web scraping, and doesn't even work with private Steam profiles. GOG manages to import data from Epic without issues.
