The Tragedy of Volodymyr Zelensky: Beyond the Ukrainian President’s Finest Hour
- antitorture 3y agoThank you for posting this. I refrained from voting since this is a throwaway. As someone who does not speak Russian (nor even anything aside from the type of German or Spanish one used to woo a hostelmate), it's hard to find good primary sources like this. He reminds me of how it could have been if John Stewart had actually run for president. The Italian Five Star movement's Euroskepticism is utterly toxic, but that core idea of "politics should not be a profession" is a very good idea... I hate the show "House of Cards", but the American remake does a good job showing how if you truly try to advocate for your district, it often ends with someone decent dying and the evil moving on up. You can see in the piece when they discuss his comments on Donbas how quickly someone well intentioned from entertainment can quickly run aground when put on the spot. (Since apparently not every comedy fan spends hours each day F5ing anything related to the Foundations of Geopolitics) I worry we have already forgotten the very valuable lessons learned when the Icelandic people locked up their bankers briefly. (The difference being that was a cold war that never went hot, because the unlike Putin, the governments of the EU are unwilling to shoot their own people, let alone conscript them into wars of aggression.) Edit: there were errors in this comment. I will leave them in. I stand by my words.

I'm glad you enjoyed the piece, at least. >the American remake does a good job showing how if you truly try to advocate for your district, it often ends with someone decent dying and the evil moving on up This is an extremely cynical worldview not necessarily borne out by history over the long term, and also why I ended up hating the show after the second season. >unlike Putin, the governments of the EU are unwilling to shoot their own people I would say they just don't need to rely on such means as often. It has happened, and probably continues to do so under the radar. The guy who was found in a duffel bag in his bathtub that was blamed on the Russians, for example: https://kitklarenberg.substack.com/p/rip-buzzfeed-news-intelligence-agency https://kitklarenberg.substack.com/p/rip-buzzfeed-news-intel...? For the rest, there's always extended solitary confinement, as they're doing to Julian at the moment.
