I don't know if Bill is right or wrong but I think it doesn't matter. Humans could never in their wildest dreams plant as many trees, bushes and flowers as squirrels and chipmunks plant by mistake. They hide seeds and nuts but forget where 70% of them are and then the seeds and nuts grow. As a fun side note I feed chipmunks and in turn they have covered my fence-line in sun-flowers. The bird-seed companies are supposed to spray the seeds with something to prevent germination but recently they seemed to have given up on that.
- Hatrix 3y agoI had some seedling trees growing. Squirrels, moles and deer killed them by digging around them and through the roots or eating all the leaves.
- LinuxBender 3y agoI somewhat had that issue as well. The moles were the biggest PITA so I used a spike tool that has a little door that opens and puts bait in their holes. That worked well. The deer only show up near me in the winter but I feed all 40+ of them horse pellets, vitamins, digestive enzymes, etc... So they have no interest in plants until spring and then leave go up into the mountains. I also feed the squirrels and chipmunks so they leave plants alone. Not a cheap hobby but it seems to work out.
