I once felt as you, that school was pointless and uninformative, but watching my kids develop key skills that we all take for granted from the focused instruction and practice provided to them by the public K-12 program changed my mind. I've been able to spend my time with them teaching those topics you laid out (some of which are quite opinionated) and not drilling the basics.
