I might be missing something (I haven't developed for android or rooted my phone), but isn't this essentially what HTC permits with their 'unlock your bootloader' tool (http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/)? Or does Android require some additional breaking in order to achieve the equivalent of init=/bin/sh?
