Don't use email much, huh?
- jqpabc123 3y agoSorry, email wasn't invented by Google and Gmail is not the only provider of it. What Google added to email was data mining and privacy invasion which I can easily live without.
- NoZebra120vClip 3y agoUnless you spend all your time writing, sending, receiving, and reading email all by your lonesome, we're primarily thinking of the individuals, organizations, and businesses which correspond with you. None of your friends or family use Gmail? You don't know anyone in school or college who's served 100% by Google Workspace? What about businesses? You probably don't even know which businesses use Workspace and Gmail, because they're using their own domains. Google has a significant corporate buy-in, so if you take away Google, then you're left with Microsoft for businesses, which is still surely the biggest player, but Google is second, because Apple has no comparable offerings in this regard.
- jqpabc123 3y agoNone of your friends or family use Gmail? Sure they do --- much to my disapproval. But if they can't find a suitable alternative in relatively short order, maybe I should use this time apart to re-evaluate our relationship.
- tomjen3 3y agoThere are other, better, providers.
- NoZebra120vClip 3y agoI don't deny that there are other providers. I don't begrudge anyone the choice of a provider; choose whatever service works best for you. This thread did not begin with an expression of personal choice, it began with a wish for nihilistic extinction. It doesn't matter who you want to disappear. Let's say I hate Amazon AWS and I wished that their cloud services would go away. I don't use AWS because they're terrible and I want all my associates to stop using AWS. So AWS goes away. What happens then? Have people been given ample space to choose another? Is this just an alternate universe where AWS never existed, or did their service just vanish suddenly and take everyone with it? I mean, it's like saying, I wish Australia would go away. I wish Europe didn't exist. Yeah you don't have to live there, or purchase their products, but some people would miss it, and they're sort of part of the economy. Major parts. Gmail and Outlook constitute 900-pound-gorillas in the email-provider space. Yahoo! perhaps a distant third? No business in their right mind will choose Protonmail, or GMX, for 50,000 employees and billion-dollar revenues. How many sysadmins are running around making OwnCloud work at a Fortune 500 firm? Honestly, I get it, I wanted Microsoft to shrivel up and die when I was a young adult. I was a staunch Unix defender and it was my way or the highway. It's easy to resent someone's business practices when you're not in business or you don't rely on providers for essential services. But, evil or not, Google is part of the world's infrastructure, so it's not realistic or productive to wish them into the cornfield, Anthony. It's a Good Life, okay?
