Opinion: The Copyright Office is making a mistake on AI-generated art
- jqpabc123 3y agoTrivially easy work around --- just don't mention AI. "AI" is not a legal entity. If you try to resister a copyright to "AI", of course it will be rejected. No real surprise. The same will happen if you try to register a copyright to the computer you used to write a novel or to the paintbrush that was used to "create" a painting. Wake up and smell the coffee --- AI is just a tool, not unlike thousands of others that can be used to create copyrightable works. The mistake and illogic here is trying to assign copyright to the tool rather than the person (aka the legal entity) who wielded it. AI doesn't create anything without some human input --- training, direction and guidance. Another major disaster narrowly averted. I think I'll take the rest of the day off.
- isaacfrond 3y agoYou can get the registration, but how are you going to enforce it? Any lawyer worth its sold will have any easy time proving that I don't have the skills to create something like Théâtre D'opéra Spatial. Moreover it is full of telltale signs that it was created by machine. So... commited fraud on the copyright office. I don't think you are going to win that case.

- fzzzy 3y agoWhat if ai does create something without human input?Take a random number, generate some text from that with a high temperature, then feed it back in and let it hallucinate away. What then?
- jqpabc123 3y agoWake me up if AI ever makes the conscious decision to do all that on it's own for the sake of art. I would like to be the first to ask our new overlord what it's plans are with regard to copyright rules.
