India agrees to reserve a third of parliament seats for women from 2029
- amai 3y agoThere are already some countries with different kinds of quotas for parliaments. Interestingly, reserved seats in parliament for women exist mostly in dictatorships (Saudi Arabia, China, Egypt, Pakistan), where parliaments have nothing to say anyway. I wonder if the introduction in India now indicates that in India the parliament also has nothing to say anymore and is drifting towards dictatorship? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_quota https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_quota
- Bostonian 3y agoThis is a bad idea that restricts voters' choices. If people want more female MPs, they can vote for them.
- version_five 3y agoPlus the slippery slope of what other identity groups should get seats reserved for them. It's also not democratic so I don't really see how it could work in a western country, but then I've been surprised a lot recently.
