OpenAI and ChatGPT Lawsuit List

- sillysaurusx 3y agoInterestingly, I was served with papers by the Silverman firm. https://twitter.com/theshawwn/status/1704559992135717238?s=46&t=CHNZIj4cQ8XNT6qqZQipWQ https://twitter.com/theshawwn/status/1704559992135717238?s=4... It’s neat to be involved. Though I wonder what they could possibly want, since books3 was public. That was the whole point of making it.
- CamperBob2 3y agoDid you torrent it? Maybe that's their beef.
- sillysaurusx 3y agoNa, I’m not a party to the lawsuit. Already spoke to a lawyer about it. It’s standard to put anyone on notice who might become a witness. They’ll request whatever information they think I might have that could help their case, and might call me in for a deposition. And they’ll probably lose. It’s pretty clear that the output matters, not the input. What sucks is that we can’t open source any training data anymore. So no one can make a competitor to ChatGPT. Even eleuther was cowed into silence with legal threats. They’re trying to make a non-copyrighted version of The Pile, but it’ll be hard to amass the data quality necessary. Meanwhile private companies can just vacuum up everything.
- ronsor 3y agoIt's interesting they want Internet history preserved... Considering that Chrome and most browsers automatically delete it after 3 months without any option to turn that off.
- carbocation 3y agoAm I reading the summary of Claim 4 accurately, that someone is suing OpenAI because a journalist copied and pasted an inaccurate statement from a chatbot into a real news article without doing fact checking?
- simonw 3y agoNo, the journalist did do the fact checking and didn't publish the article: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/9/23755057/openai-chatgpt-false-information-defamation-lawsuit https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/9/23755057/openai-chatgpt-fa... > Riehl never published the false information generated by ChatGPT but checked the details with another party. It’s not clear from the case filings how Walters’ then found out about this misinformation. Amusingly the root cause of this was they "asked ChatGPT to summarize a real federal court case by linking to an online PDF". This is one of the most frustrating ChatGPT bugs: it can't fetch URLs (at least not the default verison) but it will happily pretend that it can. I wrote about that here: https://simonwillison.net/2023/Mar/10/chatgpt-internet-access/ https://simonwillison.net/2023/Mar/10/chatgpt-internet-acces...
- carbocation 3y agoThanks, that's a fun clarification. Also, I feel like the summaries in the OP could be improved since I tried to give it a fair reading and I got it wrong: "This alleged defamation emanates from the purported dissemination of misleading information to a member of the journalistic profession, subsequently leading to the promulgation of inaccurate and erroneous news coverage pertaining to a federal lawsuit concerned with matters of civil rights."
- CamperBob2 3y agoThat's how you can identify the pioneers... they're the ones with all the arrows sticking out of their back.
- nullifidian 3y agoWould be funny to discover that libgen was the key provider of knowledge for the AI revolution. Unsung heroes so to speak.

- mistrial9 3y agoI guess I had heard once that LeCun was some kind of dominance/submission advocate. But reading about the "Cop and the Girl from the Donut Store" soft-core sex story as original training material in Books, does take on a new level of significance now.
