First private US passenger rail line in 100 years is about to link Miami
- version_five 3y ago... reaching speeds of 125 mph (200 kph). ...the 3.5-hour, 235-mile (378-kilometer) trip between the state’s biggest tourist hubs — about 30 minutes less than the average drive between the two cities. Thirty-two trains will run daily. It's really not that fast ie the travel time is not competitive with flying, it's more just regular train. Otoh, they do have good frequency. Hopefully this means it's pretty painless ie you can just show up and get on, as opposed to having to book in advance to get a good price on a specific train, wait in line, go through some kind of security, all the other stuff that makes air travel worse. It won't be competitive of there's any of that. If you can just show up and get on maybe.
- mlhpdx 3y agoIt’s a bit faster than the trains running from Portland to Seattle, so there’s that to celebrate. Hopefully it gets faster over time. Comparing to flying Portland to Seattle, it’s a wash mostly when including transfer times (airports are in the outskirts, require arriving well in advance). But, the train is “on time” maybe half the rides I’ve taken (and the delays can be hours) so the airplane has determinism going for it…
- vondur 3y agoI'm excited for their project to link suburban LA county with Las Vegas. Interstate 15, the highway that links to the two areas together gets routinely shut down due to accidents. Would be far nicer to hop on a train and relax for the trip, and not deal with driving.
- gabrielsroka 3y agoFull title, although too long for HN "First private US passenger rail line in 100 years is about to link Miami and Orlando at high speed"
- 1MachineElf 3y agoThe Brightline has a good reputation among my friends in Florida. Traveling from Palm Beach County down to Miami Dade has never been easier.
