Looking at the images, I'm confused how he drowned in that stream.

  Look how high the banks are, and they're not undercut. The water must be getting up near that level with some amount of frequency to erode it like that. This looks like a lowpoint for a fairly wide area, so this creek is collecting rainwater over a pretty substantial plain. The creek is also wider upstream and dramatically narrows under the bridge. I wouldn't be surprised if that creek got 10 feet deep in heavy rain. There was a similar creek by my grandparents house that would get something like 15 feet deep and flood out the road.
