Certainly an interesting read. I seem to see a distinction between reality based trauma and fictional. I'm more left leaning and my trauma/fear comes from being a healthcare practitioner during COVID and getting constantly abused, being a cyclist and being constantly harassed and abused, watching climate change have tangible and increasing consequences, watching cars and guns kill cyclist friends and children at increasing rates, etc... All while the rightwing says none of those things are real and pushes completely made up crap constantly. Almost more frustratingly is the media's "both sides" horse race reporting of it all.

- 303uru 3y agoLol, and here is the whacko in the wild.
- iraqmtpizza 3y agoBeing on the wrong side of a moral issue should cause you trauma. So, enjoy.
- musicale 3y ago> watching cars and guns kill cyclist friends and children at increasing rates This chart doesn't break out the data for cyclists and children, but motor vehicle deaths per capita seem to be decreasing over time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_fatality_rate_in_U.S._by_year#/media/File:US_traffic_deaths_per_VMT,_VMT,_per_capita,_and_total_annual_deaths.png https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_fatality_rate_in... Gun suicide rate (per 100K people) seems to be approaching its historical peak from 1977, while murder rate is approaching the local peak from ~1992: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/26/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/ https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/26/what-the-... It's still drastically higher than Canada's however.
- 303uru 3y agoThat’s for passengers in a vehicle. Pedestrian deaths are at a 40 year high with no signs of that growth slowing.

- dang 3y agoCould you please stop posting unsubstantive comments and flamebait? You've unfortunately been doing it repeatedly. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for. If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.
- iraqmtpizza 3y agoI'll take that as a "it's not per capita, I'm just bad at math" Why is anything remotely not-far-left somehow flamebait? How about you get a little perspective and then come back to me. I have every right to be equally confident in my position as anyone else. Moreso in fact because I'm actually correct. Misinformation about motor vehicles is harmful and needs to be refuted with fervor at least equal to that of the misinformation purveyor. Otherwise rational thinking dies. Surely you appreciate this fact.
- dang 3y ago> anything remotely not-far-left somehow flamebait? That's an illusion. People always assume that the site and/or the mods are biased against them. The other side feels exactly the same way. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26148870 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26148870 https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=%22always%20feels%22%20mods%20by%3Adang&sort=byDate&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...
- musicale 3y ago> being a healthcare practitioner during COVID and getting constantly abused I'm really sorry to hear that! People on the frontlines of COVID really deserve support and gratitude. Recently I talked with a nurse who had to take a break from work, not due to abuse from other people (fortunately), but just from the overwhelming and ever-present death and suffering during the pandemic.
- thegrim22 3y agoSo, to summarize, in a thread about polarization ... you're listing out the political issues that affect you that you think the other side of the aisle doesn't care about, while using emotional/alarmist phrasing, accusing the other side of lying, and complaining that the media isn't biased enough towards your brand of politics. How can you not see that you yourself are a huge part of the problem?
- 303uru 3y agoYes, I care about facts. Sorry that offends you.
