Why driving above the speed limit is a mug’s game
- Bostonian 3y agoOn much of Route 2 in Massachusetts, the posted speed limit is 55 mph, but the median speed of cars is about 70 mph, and I don't see any police. If you are not going to ticket people for driving X mph, your speed limit should be at least (X-10) mph (in this case of Route 2, 60 mph). Otherwise posted speed limits have little meaning but do enable police to stop people capriciously.
- bell-cot 3y agoYou know the author is a Brit, trying to be clever and humorous, when... > Two other things to take on board here. Firstly, driving much above the speed limit on motorways is a mug’s game. The best way to reduce journey time on long motorway journeys is to make your family perform pelvic floor exercises to strengthen their bladders. At the other end of the scale, we need to think harder before reducing speed limits from 30 to 20mph. In time lost per ten miles, this is equivalent to reducing motorway speed limits from 70 to 33mph.
- ZeroGravitas 3y agoIn case anyone is missing the context, the last couple of paragraphs reveal that this is related to current UK culture war over reducing speed limits to 20 in areas where people live.
