It always feels like the mods must secretly be against your side in an argument (https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=%22always%20feels%22%20mods%20by%3Adang&sort=byDate&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...), but actually the only thing we care about is people using HN as intended. Posting like this is off topic and against the site guidelines. Moreover, when we ask people to stop doing something and they respond by doing more of that very thing, that's already a reason to ban an account.   You are right, the second post was an off-topic, and I am not sure now why I posted that. Also I didn't know you were a mod, I also have a positive opinion on mods and do value their work. Maybe my intention was not clear, I do ack that religion (any) is helpful for certain people but here I was not criticizing the church for just being the church, I was criticizing the newspaper for being inconsistent, and for that I needed to compare this case with a similar one, and this time it happened to involve the church. This is the way jurisprudence works and I try to apply the same principles when judging myself too. And in order to understand reality we should be free to express ourselves even if we risk offending others, so that is why I think that comparing the treatment of a pedophile crime against the treatment that was given to the church should be valid and not be considered a religion war. I hope this helps clarify my comment. edit: I think in my off-topic post I failed to communicate that hiding crimes help the perpetrators and that everyone should be accountable, even if it is a religion. But as I said I communicated very poorly and came the wrong way. My bad.
