Spanish girls are reporting AI-generated nudes being circulated at school

- atoav 3y agoProvided you ever heard about it. Depending how parents handle certain issues with their child, they might be incentivized to hide everything regarding that topic from them. Sexuality can be one of those topics, especially in catholic Spain. Also: if you are the type, your kiddo might not tell you because she is afraid of what you might do if she does. Kids tend to learn such things about their parents pretty quickly and in such a situation they typically just want it to go away not have their parent storm into school with a red face and give the rest of the school yet another story that can be told. If you love your kid, you consider their perspective.
- jiofj 3y agoIt's 2023, there's no such thing as "catholic Spain". Sadly, Spain is one of the most progressive countries that there are, and I say this as a Spaniard.
- drt5b7j 3y agoTo you it's sad that Spain is progressive? What would rather it be? Regressive?
- jiofj 3y agoI am a conservative. Not that I want to flaunt my political affiliation, because I know no one cares, but in HN "X is one of the most progressive countries" could sound like an endorsement, and I wanted to make sure that it didn't sound that way.

- kofejnik 3y ago“Progressive” means a set of certain policies, and not actually progressive Sadly, the word has been thoroughly hijacked
- atoav 3y agoJust like conservative. They don't want to conserve anything anymore, they just want to make money. Seems like the socialists who want to socialize everything are at least honest.
- atoav 3y agoI am from another "catholic" european country (where most people are born into catholicism), the religion, despite being rightfully irrelevant in most people's lives still has some impact on which topics people want to openly talk about. I spent half my life in a catholic country and the other half in a protestant one — so I think I can somewhat judge the impact the religion has even on mostly unreligious people.
- subjectsigma 3y agoAt no point did I suggest violence or any other unreasonable actions like screaming at school employees. I just thought it unbelievable that there would be a several-thousand word article about what mothers are doing to fix the problem without a single mention of what the fathers are doing to fix the problem. If I was in this situation I would be doing anything I could to help. I literally cannot believe I am being downvoted, flagged, and tsk-tsk’d at for daring to suggest that fathers should care about the safety and well-being of their daughters.
- atoav 3y agoI didn't read it as such, I just replied like this because there might be people out there who need to read it. There are too many men who believe being strong means being aggressive, even if in their mind they do it for their kids. If the kids see that different it can lead to a growing gap between those men and their kids. That is bad, so those who need to think about this should do so.

- xchip 3y agoHow come this is only happening in Spain?
- entwife 3y agoIt is news in Spain because, in Spain, there is a 1000+ euro fine for transmitting intimate photos of a person (of any age) without their consent. This applies to anyone who transmits the photo, including third parties. The controversy and legal question is whether or not these photos constitute intimate photos. This probably happens elsewhere, but there is no legal mechanism to prevent it.
- pvaldes 3y agoIs a test?. The app was offered only targeting Spanish children and riding the current wave of moral panic. The more transgressive it seems, the more attractive will be seen by children craving to be targeted as "malote" by their peers. So yep. Hey boy, try this "free" app and create fake nudes of your friendenemies with the chain of selfies that they drop all the time. Lots of lols guaranteed. Soon in your own children's room with a 150% probability. This is just a preheating (IMAO).
- tasubotadas 3y agoSome teenager with right skills and intention just happened to be living in Spain. Not all of the tech world lives in the SV.

- Am4TIfIsER0ppos 3y agoSpain has probably the most progressive government in Europe so they'll use specter of harming women to pass more laws outlawing more software. It'll then go up to the EU so they can control us a little more. I must say the story sounds like an older scam in which you "romance" someone to get them to send you naked pictures of themselves then extort them. The AI just skips the time cost to get the material.
- Eumenes 3y agoWhere's Franco when you need him
- julienreszka 3y agoin some AI nudes, probably
- pewpew2020 3y agoEven if your real nudes leak, now you can always say they are ai-generated :)
- xchip 3y agoIf this is true, how comes we are not seeing nudes of every famous person?
- erellsworth 3y agoProbably because you're not looking for them?
- CatWChainsaw 3y agoWell when you have a lot of money you can afford a legal team that can preemptively terrorize people for publishing anything that has even a whiff of bad press. Why do you think the offshore financial world can maintain the level of secrecy it has.
- tamimio 3y agoI think it’s the other way around, I think AI is being the scapegoat in this scenario, notice this is coming from different cultures that might be extremely taboo to have such thing around, so what’s a better way to refute the whole leak? Say it’s fake, remember, before AI, the scapegoat was photoshop, “that’s not me that’s photoshop” it goes, however, it was relatively easy to find if it really was or not, AI on the other hand, requires some more investigation, and that might be for public figures or politicians, it won’t for a bunch of school students.
