    For quite a few reasons "invest or save" will bring out the worst of people's self-centeredness. That is, doing the selfish thing doesn't seem virtuous when the self is your present day self but it seems more virtuous to be selfish for the good of your future self, your family, etc. That is, there is a good/bad polarity attached to be oriented towards the future or the present in people's minds which gives you a pass to be more bad in terms of the effects your actions have on others. (The Onion ought to do a parody where they check in on the kids who waited for two marshmallows and find that they are all fat and have diabetes 40 years later, but the kids who refused marshmallows alltogether are running marathons)
