I was discussing this with a friend today. In my opinion, the next generation of consoles will be the last. By the time the generation after that would be ready (12-15 years away), 5g will be widespread, 6g will be rolling out and satellite internet will also be fairly comprehensive. USB-C will be widespread and will replace HDMI ports on TVs, not that that matters too much because everyone will be using AR glasses by then and most devices will be capable of doing wireless HDMI. The cloud apps will have been perfected and it will really make very little sense for people to have a massive PC tower size gaming console in their living room.
By the time a console generation ends, console gamers are at least 7 years behind PC gamers in terms of performance. People choose consoles over PCs because the convenience of the console trumps having to maintain a gaming rig. If you no longer have to do that because it's all done for you, why would you choose to purchase another expensive bit of hardware that's limited to one location and that gives worse performance and doesn't let you access the latest games when you can just run everything off the expensive bit of hardware (phone) that you've already got? Consoles will die because the cloud experience will become a better experience than the console, and the economics of making the consoles themselves will no longer make sense for the companies because there won't be enough people who want to buy them. It will also end up being a better experience for game devs because they only have to support one platform (PC).
I also think we're going to also see a shift away from laptops towards desktop modes on phones, especially as AR tech becomes commonplace.
