I'm a somewhat old coot and do remember those days, but I think the term still makes sense but only in a lan environment. machines still have hostnames, and home routers will often trust your dhcp clients machine name. So I can still look up steamdeck.lan and find the IP of my steam deck and in that context calling it a machine name is perfectly apt and I think would still be well understood.
