your premise is wrong...any discerning user would select the default search, not google
- 1vuio0pswjnm7 3y agoNB. This is not a premise of mine, it's the argument being made to Judge Mehta in the DC Circuit by Google's lawyers in the antitrust case relating to search. Essentially, the argument is: "People choose Google search, and they choose it because it's the best." (And further, "switching search engines is easy; it only takes seconds") But if that's true then why pay billions to be the default. People would choose Google anyway. Because it's the best. And this leaves the question: What's the reason for the agreements and payment of tens of billions to Apple, etc.
- anenefan 3y agoAh well google lawyers ... wouldn't surprise me the least if those lawyers would dress a devil up as a sweet lamb - however reality is as pestatije puts it, adding discerning users who can recall 10 years ago and what a real search looked like or should be. All free to use search engines seem to be pulling the pin on providing decent thorough results ... I've noticed DuckDuckgo (though it's never been close to what old google was like) is starting to lag somewhat as well ... I guess there's no need to spend more to compete if the competition have dropped their game. Funny thing today I was asked by a family member why I hadn't already googled and got the inner workings and information sheet for an old farm tool I was helping them with ... yeah once that'd be something I would have done before I even arrived - so I had to explain the days where I visit online for how something like that might come apart are about done for ... ended up quoting the example from a post from the other day at Hacker News, the most amazing phrase that apparently has not been written anywhere online When was the last time you got lucky? Today for google today, for me it's now dropped back to just one reply ... DDG gave nothing - just pitiful. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37532165 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37532165 Google pays of course to position themselves, it's advertising revenue driving it, flogging their services to more people as default, they make money even if it's the first attempt the ugh, stupid phone, ok so it shouldn't matter since it is just a simple search.
