The need to rename in order to work around behaviour in Excel seems outrageous on the face of it. But it is just one example of the tool shaping the user. Anyone care to add your favourite example of technology shaping how something is represented, categorised or even thought about? For me 1/3 being the endless .3333333… on most computers is a subtle yet very shaping behaviour.
- endofreach 3y agoI do like your comment, but i don‘t understand how 1/3 = endless 0.3333… fits as an example to technology shaping the user. Can you explain what you mean here?
- MathMonkeyMan 3y agoI think GP was referring to how 1/3 cannot be represented as a binary floating point number. There should be something other than a "3" after the "..." if that was the point. 1/3 truly is an endless 0.33333... independent of any technology.
