iPhone 15 on the big screen (via USB-C DisplayPort)
- programmer_dude 3y agoBetter late than never. Now where's my 3.5mm audio port?
- ksec 3y agoConsidering you can already use Keyboard and Mouse on iPhone. We should be able to turn iPhone into a Desktop Client and use it with Safari ? If not, What Am I missing? ( I want to do this at work so I dont have Firewall restrictions.)
- rchaud 3y ago> If not, What Am I missing? Apple's need to squeeze every possible dollar out of its deliberate platform restrictions? What you're asking for has been available on Samsung Galaxy S,Z and Motorola Edge phones for several years already.
- xattt 3y agoI’m waiting for this feature so bad. This is fanboy-ing, but the writing is on the wall with the release of Logic and FCP for iOS. Currently, these have which have weird multitasking restrictions that are probably going to overcome in the next couple of iOS release cycles. Apple is rumored to be working on a low-cost notebook to compete with Chromebooks in the edu space. I imagine this will be iOS-based (iBook, anyone?) and will need some sort of keyboard/mouse-based UI. This UI then be carried over to USB-C phones too, but feature differentiation will restrict it to Pro phones only (like Samsung does with S and A phones for DeX).
- postalrat 3y agoThey are saving that to invent sometime later. It will be amazing.
- JuanPosadas 3y agoIs this feature competitive with Samsung Dex/Android Desktop?
- rchaud 3y agoNot at all, it will just mirror the narrow iPhone UI. Photos and videos will be full screen however. DeX is an entire desktop UI with multi-tasking and window management/snapping supported. This is just a barebones external display mirroring implementation.
- theogravity 3y agoIt mentions USB 3.1, so is this limited to the Pro models only since they have USB 3, while the non-pro is 2?
- m3drano 3y agoIIUC the DP is using an alternate mode that should be available, even if USB signaling is only 2.0.
- jauntywundrkind 3y agoWord on the street is Android is finally looking to make this more regularly supported, after basically a decade of Samsung DeX doing it & Android explicitly not doing it. Sad to be in last place here. I really hope we see USB4 show up soon. With usb4, you don't have to pick just display or data, you get both. For phones to make great desktops, they need to be able to plug into a docking hub & use both displays & the rich set of available peripherals; the current USB or DisplayPort alt-mode story doesn't support that. In my fantasy world phones would also have >1 USB port, but that's definitely swag.
